GREIF 1b

HEINKEL

The design of the GREIF 1A glider started in 1959. It was carried out by a young student named OTTO FUNK* on behalf of HEINKEL of Speyer (otherwise it would be called FK1). GREIF 1A made its first flight in December 1960. It was first presented to the public during the Hanover Airshow in 1962.

* Thereafter Otto Funk would design the entire series of FK Ulm, worldwide known.

The Variant Greif 1b was equipped with a BMW 8026 turbojet. The engine was integrated into the fuselage. It was attached to the bulkhead behind the pilot's seat, inclined at about 30 ° towards the ground. It allowed a self launch.

To achieve its jet glider, Otto Funk has benefited from many solutions already integrated in the design of the Greif 1a. Specialy :

  • An all metal construction, in order to be able to maintain a low Weight
  • Some low load elements, made of glassfibre. 

Wings

The wing has a trapezoidal contour, without dihedral. The main bond ribs are aluminum. All the others are made of polystyrene foam. The fuselage fittings are made of steel. The coating is aluminum 0.5 mm thick. The ailerons and brakes of the Schempp-Hirth type are made of lightweight metal.*

Fuselage

The front fuselage, from the tip to the end of the reactor compartment, consists of tubular steel frames covered with a non-structural glassfibre shell. The rear of the fuselage consists of a tubular beam made of lightweight alloy sheet. The two sections are assembled by 4 bolts.

Tail unit

It is a V-tail at 100 °. One of the peculiarities of this empennage is to have its two planes interchangeable.
