Il demeure aujourd\u2019hui comme l\u2019une des figures majeures de l\u2019aviation l\u00e9g\u00e8re du XXe si\u00e8cle, un concepteur dont les cr\u00e9ations ont marqu\u00e9 durablement l\u2019histoire a\u00e9ronautique par leur \u00e9l\u00e9gance, leur puret\u00e9 de ligne et leurs performances remarquables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ing\u00e9nieur dipl\u00f4m\u00e9 du Politecnico di Milano, Frati d\u00e9veloppe tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t une fascination pour l\u2019a\u00e9rodynamique et les avions \u00e0 haut rendement. Dans une Italie d\u2019apr\u00e8s-guerre en pleine reconstruction industrielle, il s\u2019impose rapidement par une approche singuli\u00e8re de la conception a\u00e9ronautique : cr\u00e9er des appareils \u00e0 la fois esth\u00e9tiques, l\u00e9gers, rapides et techniquement coh\u00e9rents, o\u00f9 chaque ligne r\u00e9pond \u00e0 une n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 a\u00e9rodynamique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contrairement \u00e0 de nombreux ing\u00e9nieurs de son \u00e9poque, Stelio Frati ne concevait pas uniquement des avions performants ; il dessinait des machines harmonieuses, presque intemporelles. Ses r\u00e9alisations t\u00e9moignent d\u2019une recherche constante d\u2019\u00e9quilibre entre efficacit\u00e9, finesse a\u00e9rodynamique et plaisir de pilotage. Cette philosophie fera de lui l\u2019un des rares concepteurs capables de r\u00e9unir admiration technique et \u00e9motion esth\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On disait souvent de Stelio Frati qu\u2019il \u00e9tait \u00ab le Ferrari de l\u2019aviation l\u00e9g\u00e8re \u00bb. Cette comparaison ne venait pas uniquement de son origine italienne, mais surtout de sa capacit\u00e9 unique \u00e0 associer performances \u00e9lev\u00e9es, \u00e9l\u00e9gance des lignes et raffinement technique. Comme les automobiles de Maranello, les avions dessin\u00e9s par Frati se distinguaient imm\u00e9diatement par leur style, leur puret\u00e9 esth\u00e9tique et leur caract\u00e8re profond\u00e9ment passionnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une carri\u00e8re au service de l\u2019aviation l\u00e9g\u00e8re<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La carri\u00e8re de Frati d\u00e9bute dans les ann\u00e9es qui suivent la Seconde Guerre mondiale, p\u00e9riode durant laquelle l\u2019industrie a\u00e9ronautique italienne tente de retrouver sa place sur la sc\u00e8ne internationale. Il collabore notamment avec Caproni, o\u00f9 il dessine plusieurs appareils novateurs qui r\u00e9v\u00e8lent d\u00e9j\u00e0 son style reconnaissable entre tous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parmi ses r\u00e9alisations marquantes, dans le domaine de l&#8217;aviation \u00e0 r\u00e9action, figure le Caproni F5, qui effectue son premier vol le 17 mai 1952. Motoris\u00e9 par un turbor\u00e9acteur Palas, ce petit jet d\u2019entra\u00eenement d\u00e9montre d\u00e9j\u00e0 la capacit\u00e9 de Frati \u00e0 concevoir des appareils compacts, \u00e9l\u00e9gants et particuli\u00e8rement performants. Destin\u00e9 \u00e0 la formation des pilotes militaires, le F5 poss\u00e9dait des qualit\u00e9s de vol tr\u00e8s modernes pour son \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans les ann\u00e9es 1960, Frati poursuit ses recherches dans le domaine des jets l\u00e9gers avec la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Procaer. Il y con\u00e7oit notamment le Procaer F400 Cobra, un \u00e9l\u00e9gant biplace propuls\u00e9 par un turbor\u00e9acteur Marbor\u00e9 IIC, dont le premier vol intervient le 16 novembre 1960. Avec son fuselage effil\u00e9, sa verri\u00e8re profil\u00e9e et ses lignes d\u2019une grande puret\u00e9, le F400 Cobra illustre parfaitement la signature stylistique de Frati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le projet \u00e9voluera ensuite vers le Procaer F480 Cobra, version quadriplace plus ambitieuse \u00e9quip\u00e9e d\u2019un r\u00e9acteur Marbor\u00e9 VI plus puissant et d\u2019une cabine ferm\u00e9e destin\u00e9e \u00e0 une utilisation davantage tourn\u00e9e vers l\u2019aviation civile. Bien que ce programme ne d\u00e9passe pas le stade du prototype inachev\u00e9, il t\u00e9moigne de la vision avant-gardiste de Frati, qui entrevoyait d\u00e9j\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mergence d\u2019une aviation d\u2019affaires l\u00e9g\u00e8re \u00e0 r\u00e9action accessible et performante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une philosophie fond\u00e9e sur l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9gance et l\u2019efficacit\u00e9<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chez Stelio Frati, l\u2019esth\u00e9tique n\u2019\u00e9tait jamais dissoci\u00e9e de la technique. Ses avions se distinguent par des fuselages extr\u00eamement fluides, des surfaces soigneusement \u00e9quilibr\u00e9es et une recherche permanente de r\u00e9duction de la tra\u00een\u00e9e. Cette \u00e9l\u00e9gance naturelle n\u2019\u00e9tait pas d\u00e9corative : elle r\u00e9sultait directement d\u2019une compr\u00e9hension profonde des lois a\u00e9rodynamiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frati accordait \u00e9galement une attention particuli\u00e8re au rapport poids\/puissance. Ses structures, \u00e0 la fois l\u00e9g\u00e8res et robustes, permettaient d\u2019obtenir des performances \u00e9lev\u00e9es avec des motorisations relativement modestes. Cette ma\u00eetrise technique rendait ses avions efficaces, \u00e9conomiques et particuli\u00e8rement agr\u00e9ables \u00e0 piloter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Son souci du d\u00e9tail allait jusqu\u2019aux plus petits \u00e9l\u00e9ments de conception. Rien n\u2019\u00e9tait laiss\u00e9 au hasard : implantation des entr\u00e9es d\u2019air, finesse des profils, ergonomie du cockpit ou int\u00e9gration des structures participaient tous \u00e0 une coh\u00e9rence d\u2019ensemble rarement atteinte dans l\u2019aviation l\u00e9g\u00e8re de cette \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un h\u00e9ritage durable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019influence de Stelio Frati d\u00e9passe largement les fronti\u00e8res italiennes. Ses cr\u00e9ations ont inspir\u00e9 plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d\u2019ing\u00e9nieurs et continuent aujourd\u2019hui encore de fasciner pilotes, collectionneurs et passionn\u00e9s d\u2019aviation. Nombre de ses appareils sont devenus des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences dans leur cat\u00e9gorie, tant pour leurs performances que pour leur beaut\u00e9 intemporelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Son nom reste \u00e9galement associ\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs avions l\u00e9gendaires de l\u2019aviation sportive et de tourisme, dont certains furent construits sous licence dans diff\u00e9rents pays. Tr\u00e8s peu de concepteurs ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 imposer une identit\u00e9 visuelle aussi forte tout en conservant une telle rigueur technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stelio Frati s\u2019est \u00e9teint le 14 mai 2010 \u00e0 Milan, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 90 ans. Il laisse derri\u00e8re lui un h\u00e9ritage exceptionnel, fait d\u2019avions devenus embl\u00e9matiques, mais aussi d\u2019une certaine id\u00e9e de l\u2019aviation : une aviation o\u00f9 la
